Low Carb/Keto WOE at Disney World

I can not tell you how much I'm looking
forward to my next Disney vacation.

I wish we were leaving today! With that being said, I'm also quite scared about how I am going to stay on track with my Low Carb Lifestyle. Mary is eating low carb as well and I really want us both to stay on track. I know we're going to have a few times where we are going to indulge, but I truly want to keep this to a minimum. With hard work we'll continue to lose weight while on vacation!

Easier said than done!!!!!!!! I'm already sweating from the Florida heat!
Maybe that's just nerves of staying on track !

I also want to keep within my calorie count, although I might forego the calorie count while on vacation and just watch my carbs. It's going to be too difficult to watch everything! My goal is to go there with a plan, if the plan fails a few times, no worries, just jump back on for the next meal.

Disney World and Low Carb? Can you do it?

First and foremost when you are going to Disney with a family and everyone eats a little differently, there needs to be compromises! Chuck and I have agreed that if he plans on going off to a different locale, say when he goes to Mexico for lunch while we are at Epcot, he's going to help me with the three kids before he heads off ! Yes, yes, yes, I included my Mother In Law as one of the kids. She knows I love her dearly, and I guarantee she's laughing her butt off reading that statement!

Just so you know, this post has taken me days (a week actually) to write and it is long. With that being said, I've enjoyed the research and will find this a useful resource every time I go to Disney World!

I've been doing tons of research and have joined the "Keto at Disney" Facebook group. The first thing I found on this group was that the Golden Oak Outpost in Frontierland (Magic Kingdom) has Porkrinds! You can also get Queso as a side; chili too! My question is if there are beans in the chili or sugar? I'm reading that there is sugar in the "dusting" for the Porkrinds. Now, this is just a dusting so I'm going to see how I handle it the first time. If it bothers me I will ask for no dusting the next time since we'll be there 5 times over a 2 week period.

Our first day there, we are spending the afternoon and early evening at Downtown Disney (I know...Disney Springs...blah blah blah, I will always call it Downtown Disney). After being in the car, driving for 15 - 16 hours, all I want it to stretch my legs. Downtown Disney will be a great place with tons of great eating options. The problem is making good choices. Once again "Keto at Disney" has helped me find a perfect place, maybe more than one!

I'm looking forward to trying "The Polite Pig" for lunch or Dinner, who knows maybe both! Either way they have tons of options! The folks on "Keto at Disney" are saying the Brisket is to die for even without the sauce. Although it isn't on the menu I read that Porkrinds are also available. I'm sure the coleslaw has sugar but maybe Mary and I could share it.

My hubby, does low cal/low fat but he's decided "We're on vacation, all bets are off!" Now, for him that's OK as he's lost 65+ pounds and he can handle a slight weight fluctuation. Some serious KUDOS to him for losing that much and keeping it off! Me on the other hand, I'm only down 14 pounds, I'm not willing to have a Disney eating free for all. Chuck wants to eat at "Chef Art Smith's Homecomin'". I'm not sure I will be able to eat there unless I get a salad or maybe a burger. To be honest, I'm trying my best not to eat a burger or salad every day. I know there are going to be many times when that is going to be my only option.

Chuck also wants to eat at "The Edison" for dinner. The "Hawker's Box of Balls" (aka Lamb Balls) sounds delicious. Not to mention the "Centennial Steak"! I think I'm ready to eat! Now I just have to wait until we get there....this may be difficult!

We are only eating at the parks one time for Breakfast, so I plan on buying a couple dozen eggs and bacon/sausage links on our first day there. This will allow me to make breakfast at our rental house each morning. I know the kids would love French Toast or Pancakes for Breakfast. Our one Disney Breakfast is at Akershus Royal Banquet. They have Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Roasted Turkey, and many other items that will be Low Carb friendly. We have a late breakfast (almost lunch time) that day so I'll eat something small before we leave the rental house.

Gaston's Tavern is Fantasyland has a Mixed Veggie cup with dip. My question would be is it all carrots and celery? I imagine that it is but I've got it on my list to investigate!

Have you ever had the Pepper Jack Warm Stuffed Pretzel at the Lunching Pad in the Magic Kingdom (Tomorrowland)? Well if you haven't, DON'T! Just start singing "STOP, in the name of love, before you break my heart..think it oooovvver!" Seriously, you will always want it. I'm going to FORCE, that's strong....request...who am I kidding, force was correct, Chuck or Jesse to get this so I can have one bite. Yeah, again, who am I kidding, it will be two bites! Remember I'm at Disney! I need to have some fun items too!

And since we are on the topic of delicious treats.....have you had the Raspberry White Chocolate cookie from the Main Street Bakery? Chuck and I have already discussed these. He's not allowed to bring any home, not even to the rental house! He has to eat it at the parks, preferably without me seeing it. However, if I do see it, I will have a bite, or two! ;) This day I'm running before we go to the parks.

Pecos Bills is one of our favorite Quick Service places. They have so many choices for the whole family! I will have to make omissions for each items but this is so doable! Fajita platter? No rice, beans, or tortillas. Cheese burger, taco burger, any burger minus the bun and tortilla chips. I love their taco salad! This is typically what I get.

I've always enjoyed eating at the Yak and Yeti. There is way too much temptation at this restaurant now. Maybe once I lose my weight I can have a cheat meal here, but I'm thinking this is a no go until we go back in 2020. It's something to look forward to!

The Satu'li Canteen in Animal Kingdowm (Pandora) is going to be a new experience for us. I cannot wait to try many dishes here. I'm concerned about the "Base and Sauce" choices. I may have to skip the Base and Sauce choices but I'm hearing wonderful things about the Grilled Beef ! I'm a steak girl, so where ever I can get it, I'm there.  A couple days later.....I just heard from a friend who was at Disney last week. Her family ate here for the first time and said it was great. She also provided me with this picture of the menu.

This was so helpful! I know exactly what I'm going to get at this place!

  • Slow Roasted Sliced Grilled Beef
  • Romaine & Kale Salad
  • Charred Onion Chimichurri sauce
  • Minus the Boba Balls

Hollywood Studies will always be known as MGM to my family. We don't typically spend a full day at this park and usually only eat one meal and a snack while we are there. The ABC Commissary has several choices that as long as I get rid of the fries and bun I should be OK. The coleslaw they serve is so small I'm not worried about the sugar content in it. They also allow green beans instead of fries! Their Lunch and Dinner menus vary slightly but guess what? They have STEAK for dinner!!!!!!!!!!

I really, REALLY, thought Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano was going to be out of the question. However, they have Charred Strip Steak! I'm wondering when they are going to get on the Zoodles band wagon? We'll skip this restaurant for this trip but it is definitely some place I can eat in the future.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant is one of my husband's favorite places, not really mine, but I'm going to be supportive. I'm going to have to get creative as we have reservations and I really don't want to eat another Bacon Cheeseburger. The Chili-Lime Grilled Chicken Fajita Salad may be my best bet. I will skip the Tortilla Chips but live with the Roasted Corn.

Restaurant Marrakesh is one of our favorite places. I truly expect to splurge while here. I just can't say enough good things about the food, service, and belly dancing show from this restaurant. We have friends from Moracco and they go here to eat when they are at Disney!

Everyone always says go to Sunshine Seasons if you want healthy meals while at Disney. And I'm not disagreeing 100% but I find a lot of their meals to be quite high in carbs. With that being said, they typically allow for numerous substitutions. It will be interesting to see what I truly end up eating when going here. My kids love this place, so we'll definitely be here at least once! The problem will be staying away from the desserts!!!!!!!!!!! They are so yummy!

Here's what I have been able to research! This is broken down by meal and then by park. We will be primarily eating quick service and only have a few dining reservations.

My plan, again P L A N, is to take pictures of everything I eat to share with other Keto/Low Carb eaters so they can stay on track too! Check back on a future post to see what I ate; probably more than one post!

I would say WISH ME LUCK, but I'm going to ROCK THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Breakfast time (primarily at our rental house):
  • Eggs (cracked), Bacon or Sausage
  • Epcot (Our only breakfast dining reservation)
    • Akershus Royal Table (Norway, Table Service): Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Roasted Turkey, Salami
    • Garden Grill (Table Service): Eggs, bacon, sausage
    • Asian Noodle Shop (Sunshine Seasons): Eggs, bacon, sausage, etc.
  • Keep in mind that Disney puts other things in their scrambled eggs that you find in the buffets. Just ask them to make yours with cracked eggs. Any time I've asked for something special, the accommodation has been granted without any fuss.
Lunch/Dinner - Primarily Quick Service (QS) places:
  • Magic Kingdom
    • Cosmic Rays (Tomorrowland): Bacon Cheeseburger hold the bun with green beans instead of fries; could do the same with the Grilled Chicken Club.
    • Casey's Corner (Main St): Chili Cheese Hot Dog sans the bun and fries.
    • Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen (Adventureland, Table Service): "A Lot at Steak" Salad.

    • La Cantina de San Angel (World Showcase): Taco de Pollo without the tortillas and rice (I'll take the beans); Tacos de Barbacoa (same thing)
    • Hacienda de San Angel (World Showcase Mexico; Table Service): This is one of our favorite restaurants and there isn't much for me to eat here. However, La Hacienda and the Del Mar which both serve 2 people would be a nice selection. You can skip the beans if you want.
    • Le Cellier Steakhouse (World Showcase Canada; TS): So many choices of duck, steak, etc. Just be careful of the sides! They do have a creamed spinach, not sure what all is in that.
    • Liberty Inn (World Showcase, America): Many choices here from burgers to NY Strip Steak. most come with french fries but they do have broccoli and broccoli cheddar soup.
    • Restaurant Marrakesh (World Showcase Moracco):  It will be quite difficult not to eat the Chicken Bastilla. I will probably ask them to skip the powdered sugar. I typically get the chicken/lamb kabobs. My mouth is watering!
    • Spice Road Table: Pretty much any of the "Mediterranean Specialty Entrees" sans the potatoes would be OK I think. I've not eaten here before.
    • Sunshine Seasons: Salads
  • Animal Kingdom
    • Flame Tree BBQ (Discovery Island): So many choices...ribs, chicken, pulled pork. I'm going to stick with the Rib and Chicken with any sauces on the side. The beans might be a treat but again a run that morning if I'm having those.
    • Restaurantosaurus (Dinoland): So many burger choices. Just skip the fries and bun!
    • Satu'li Canteen (Pandora): Any beef or chicken dish, may have to omit the base and sauce until I learn more about it.
    • The Smiling Crocodile (Discovery Island): Turkey BLT Sandwich minus the Ciabatta bread, I'll also minus the T.
  • MGM
    • ABC Commissary (Commissary Lane): Chicken and Ribs (hold the fries), Cheeseburger with green beans hold the bun, Chicken club with green beans hold the bun.
    • Catalina Eddie's (Sunset Blvd): Chicken Caesar Salad no croutons
    • Dockside Diner (Echo Lake): Chili cheese dog! They also have pulled pork with cole slaw but I'm thinking that will be loaded with sauce so I'm gonna pass.
    • Fairfax Fare (Sunset Blvd): Almost everything has the roasted corn medley. If I'm willing to forgo the carbs from the corn there are numerous dishes, sans rice, that can be had here. Chicken, Fajitas, pulled pork, chili, etc. This might be a last resort place for me. For dinner, almost everything has the roasted corn medley. If I'm willing to forgo the carbs from the corn there are numerous dishes, sans rice, that can be had here. Chicken, Fajitas, pulled pork, chili, etc. This might be a last resort place for me.
    • KRNR (Sunset Blvd): Chili Cheese Dog
    • Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano (Grand Avenue): Charred Strip Steak
    • PizzeRizzo (Grand Avenue): If you are willing to ignore the bread crumbs most folks put in meatballs the "Meatball Sub" minus the sub is a good choice. It is served with a Caesar Salad.
    • Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater (Commissary Lane): Chili-Lime Grilled Chicken Fajita Salad ; skip the Tortilla Chips but live with the Roasted Corn
  • Downtown Disney (so many places to eat....I just can't list them all).

    • Gaston's Tavern (Fantasyland): Mixed Veggie cup with Dip
    • Liberty Square Marter (Liberty Square): Turkey Leg, Hot dog sans bun, Pickle
    • The Lunching Pad (Tomorrowland): Hot dog sans bun with Cheese sauce
    • Prince Eric's Village Market (Fantasyland): Pickle

    • The Land Cart: if you want to share the carrots, or maybe omit them altogether there is a "Vegetable Plate" of Broccoli, Carrot Sticks, and Tomatoes with Dip
    • Refreshment Outpost (World Showcase, Africa): Hot dogs
    • Refreshment Port (World Showcase): Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup
  • MGM
    • Anaheim Produce (Sunset Blvd): Pickle
  • Animal Kingdom
    • Caravan Road (Asia): Edamame? I would have to see how these are cooked, it might be a nice treat.
    • Harambe Fruit Market (Africa): I've seen nuts at this market in the past and I will definitely be heading there again!
OMG, Are you tired from reading this? I'm tired from writing this. Like I said, it took me a week to research and put this post together. It's mainly for myself but if it helps anyone else Kudos to them.

I'm not a 100% strick Lowcarber. I have my moments of weakness and I'm willing to make certain allowances when I've worked out a lot in a particular day.

Look for posts to come once we arrive at Disney and I start posting pictures of what I actually ate. This should be an very interesting experiment!
